Personal Social Health Education
The Teaching of PSHE
Personal development and education is at the heart of what we do for every child in our care at Braithwaite CE School. Through education, support and love, we will ensure that our young people leave us equipped and confident to face the challenges of the world ahead of them.
We deliver Statutory Relationships, Sex and Health Education in KS1 and KS2 and Personal, Social, Emotional Development (PSED) is central to our EYFS provision. We have ensured a progressive coverage for all year groups by adopting the Twinkl Life's PSHE and Citizenship scheme of work which is aligned to the PSHE Association recommended programme of study. This scheme of work covers all of the required objectives and follows the three core areas of Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World.
Twinkl Life’s PSHE and Citizenship scheme of work aims to equip children with essential skills for life; it intends to develop the whole child through carefully planned and resourced lessons that develop the knowledge, skills and attributes children need to protect and enhance their wellbeing. Through these lessons, children will learn how to stay safe and healthy, build and maintain successful relationships and become active citizens, responsibly participating in society around them. Twinkl Life’s PSHE scheme of work is designed to be taught in thematic units, which we have mapped to meet the needs of our mixed age class structure. Children are taught in a spiral curriculum that revisits each theme every two years. This enables children to recall and build upon previous learning, exploring the underlying principles of PSHE education regularly at a depth that is appropriate for the age and stage of the child. PSHE is taught weekly but not exclusively through the Twinkl Life's PSHE and Citizenship scheme of work.
Keeping children safe and teaching them how to keep themselves safe is our priority. We use the award winning Project Evolve materials to teach children how to stay safe in a digital world. Units address the following areas: self-image and identity; online relationships; online reputation; online bullying; managing online information; health, well-being and lifestyles; privacy and security; and copyright and ownership. We also teach the Kidsafe programme which is a unique preventative and early intervention approach that empowers children to speak to trusted grown-ups and break silence around any issue in relation to their safety and emotional well-being. Units address the following areas: building trust and feelings; bullying and saying 'No'; internet safety; keeping private places safe and parents/carers arguing. Kidsafe is taught on a 2 year cycle across the school.
